What counts as preventive care

- Annual wellness visits — yearly physical exams with your primary care provider
- Routine screenings — blood pressure checks, cholesterol tests, diabetes screening
- Immunizations — flu shots, COVID vaccines, and other CDC-recommended vaccinations

These services must be coded as preventive by your provider. If your doctor finds something during a preventive visit that requires treatment, that portion may involve a copay.
How to access your preventive benefits
Finding in-network providers is straightforward through the First Health network. You can search for doctors accepting new patients in your area and confirm they're in-network before scheduling.
Before your visit:
- Verify the provider is in the First Health network
- Confirm your appointment is for preventive care
- Bring your Benefi member ID
At checkout: Present your member ID and confirm the visit is billed as preventive. You shouldn't owe anything at the time of service for covered preventive care.
Preventive vs. diagnostic care
Understanding the difference helps you avoid unexpected costs. Preventive care happens when you have no symptoms — it's about maintaining health. Diagnostic care investigates specific symptoms or follows up on abnormal results.
Example scenario
Your annual physical (preventive) is $0. During the exam, you mention knee pain. If your doctor examines your knee and orders an X-ray, that portion becomes diagnostic care and may have a copay.
Both Essential and Plus plans include $0 preventive care. Plus members also get additional in-person visits each year: 5 primary care, 1 specialist, and 2 urgent care visits (copays apply for these non-preventive visits).
