If I leave my job

Coverage ends soon after — here's your options.

April 19, 2026 · 2 min read

When you leave your job, your Benefi coverage typically ends on the last day of the month after your last day of work. Your employer may have a different policy, so check with HR to confirm your exact end date. You'll receive an email notification with your coverage end date once your employer processes your departure.

Your coverage options after leaving

You have several paths to maintain health coverage after your Benefi plan ends. Each option has different costs, coverage levels, and enrollment deadlines.

New employer coverage is often your simplest option if you're starting another job. Most employers offer coverage starting on your first day or after a short waiting period. Ask about benefits during your interview process so you can plan for any gap.

Marketplace coverage through healthcare.gov provides comprehensive health insurance options. You may qualify for subsidies based on your income. You have 60 days from losing your Benefi coverage to enroll in a marketplace plan as a qualifying life event.

Marketplace enrollment checklist

  1. Visit healthcare.gov within 60 days. Missing this window means waiting for open enrollment.
  2. Estimate your annual income. This determines your subsidy eligibility.
  3. Compare plan networks. Check if your preferred doctors are covered.

Medicaid may be an option if your income drops below certain thresholds. Eligibility varies by state, but you can apply anytime through your state's Medicaid office or healthcare.gov. There's no enrollment deadline for Medicaid.

COBRA continuation lets you keep your current coverage by paying the full premium yourself. However, Benefi often don't require employers to offer COBRA. Check with your HR team about whether COBRA applies to your specific situation and what it would cost.

Before your coverage ends

Download your health records and prescription history from the Benefi app before your last coverage day. You'll need recent visit summaries and medication lists when establishing care with new providers.

Request refills for any maintenance medications while you still have coverage. Your Benefi doctor can prescribe up to a 90-day supply for most medications, giving you time to establish care elsewhere.

Save any receipts for healthcare expenses during your coverage gap. You may be able to use them for tax deductions or submit them to your new insurance plan once coverage begins.
