Adding dependents anytime
Spouse, domestic partner, or kids under 26 — no QLE needed.
Life changes happen. You need to add your spouse, domestic partner, or child to your Benefi coverage. Unlike traditional insurance that restricts changes to open enrollment or qualifying life events, Benefi lets you add dependents to your plan whenever you need to.
Who can you add
Your Benefi plan covers these family members:
- Spouse (legally married)
- Domestic partner (regardless of legal status)
- Children under age 26 (biological, adopted, stepchildren, or legal dependents)
Children can stay on your plan until their 26th birthday. This matches the Affordable Care Act requirement that all health plans follow. Coverage ends at the end of the month they turn 26.
How to add dependents
Adding family members takes just a few steps in your Benefi app. You'll need basic information for each person: full legal name, date of birth, and relationship to you.
What you'll need:
- Their Social Security number (if they have one)
- Current home address
- Email address for dependents 18 and older
Once you submit the request, coverage typically starts the first of the following month. Your employer will see the updated premium on their next invoice. Depending on your employer's setup, you might see a payroll deduction increase if they pass some of the dependent cost to you.
Cost considerations
Adding dependents increases your monthly premium. The exact amount depends on your employer's contribution structure. Some employers cover the full cost of employee and dependent coverage. Others cover employees only, meaning you'd pay the full dependent premium through payroll deduction.
Check with your HR team about dependent pricing before adding family members. They can tell you the monthly cost and when payroll deductions would start.
Remember that both Essential and Plus plan benefits extend to covered dependents. They get the same Virtual Primary Care access, $0 prescriptions from the formulary, mental health sessions, and preventive care coverage. Plus plan members' dependents also receive the in-person visit allowances.

Frequently Asked Questions
When does coverage start after I add a dependent?
Coverage for newly added dependents typically starts the first of the following month after you submit the request through your Benefi app. For example, if you add your spouse on March 15th, their coverage would begin April 1st. The exact timing may vary slightly based on your employer's billing cycle, so check with your HR team if you need specific start dates.
Can I add a domestic partner even if we're not legally married?
Yes, Benefi covers domestic partners regardless of legal marriage status. You can add your domestic partner to your plan using the same process as adding a spouse. You'll need their basic information including full legal name, date of birth, and Social Security number if they have one.
What happens to my child's coverage when they turn 26?
Your child's coverage ends at the end of the month they turn 26, following Affordable Care Act requirements. For example, if your child turns 26 on June 15th, their coverage would end June 30th. Benefi will notify you in advance of this change so you can help them find alternative coverage if needed.
How much does it cost to add dependents?
Dependent costs vary by employer and depend on your company's contribution structure. Some employers cover the full premium for dependents, while others require employees to pay part or all of the dependent cost through payroll deduction. Contact your HR team for specific pricing information and to understand when any payroll deductions would begin.
Do my dependents get the same benefits I do?
Yes, dependents receive the same plan benefits as the primary member. This includes Virtual Primary Care access, $0 covered prescriptions from the Benefi formulary, mental health sessions, and preventive care coverage. If you have the Plus plan, your dependents also get the same in-person visit allowances and copay structure.
