Pharmacy won't accept my card

First things to try before calling support.

Standing at the pharmacy counter and your Benefi card isn't going through? This happens occasionally, and it's usually a quick fix. The most common reason is that the pharmacy is trying to process your card as major medical insurance instead of using the prescription benefit.

Getting your card to work

First, ask the pharmacist to re-run your card using the specific prescription benefit codes. Open your Benefi app and show them your digital ID card. Point out these three pieces of information:

  • RxBIN (the processor routing number)
  • RxPCN (the processor control number)
  • Group number (your employer's plan identifier)

These numbers tell the pharmacy system to bill your prescription benefit, not medical insurance. Many pharmacy staff default to running cards as medical coverage, which causes the rejection.

Check your medication coverage

If the card still doesn't process, verify that your medication is on the Benefi formulary. Your plan covers:

Essential plan: 500+ common generic medications at $0 Plus plan: 1,000+ generic medications at $0

Not all medications are included in the $0 formulary. If your prescription isn't covered, the pharmacy will show the cash price. This isn't a card error; it means that specific medication requires payment.

When to contact support

Still having issues after checking the benefit codes and formulary? Message a Benefi care navigator through the app. They can:

  • Call the pharmacy directly while you're still there
  • Troubleshoot technical issues with the processor
  • Confirm your eligibility status
  • Help find covered alternatives if your medication isn't on the formulary

True processing errors between Benefi and the pharmacy are typically resolved within minutes once our team connects with the pharmacist.

Temporary solutions

While resolving the card issue, you have options:

  • Pay out of pocket and submit for reimbursement if the medication is covered
  • Use a discount program like GoodRx for non-covered medications
  • Ask the pharmacist about therapeutic alternatives that might be on our formulary

Most card rejections resolve quickly once the pharmacy uses the correct benefit codes. Keep your digital ID handy in the Benefi app, and don't hesitate to reach out through the app if you need help at the pharmacy counter.
